If a turbocharger is leaking does it cause a problem or damage engine ?

I am currently weighing up whether to buy a new turbocharger or buy a used engine and turbo together. the engine of my car is working fine but its high mileage (95. 000) and it is Diesel car 04 reg, on other hand turbocharger cost at least half of the price of complete engine , also labour is not that much different between either options.
The car is renault scenic 2004, 1. 5 dci

Replace the turbo. Since you don’t give any supporting information like the make and model I can only generalize. The turbo is considerably less expensive than a complete engine assembly. The labor to remove and replace most turbos is one to four hours. To r and r an engine it is between ten and fifteen.
Don’t buy used. Get a rebuilt or new turbo and drive for another 100K.
My 2004 truck engine assembly lists for $2,000. 00 used. The new turbo is $640. 00
